"I wish to have a parrot of my own." |
 |
Eight-year-old Violet Niles, of Belfast, never tires of seeing
the movie "Paulie," about a parrot that searches for the little girl who raised
her. She loves the movie so much, in fact, that when asked by wish granters
what she'd like most in the whole world, Violet said, "A pet parrot." Violet
has a severe congenital heart condition, and spends much of her time either
at home or in hospitals. A colorful parrot would surely be a great companion.
Make-A-Wish began the search by contacting breeders to find out what type of
parrot would be appropriate and available. The parrots were flown in from
California just days before Violet's wish day from a specialty breeder in
California. Meanwhile, Moose Head Trail in Newport agreed to donate veterinary
services and all supplies.
On Sunday, March 28, 2004, Violet and her family were escorted by limousine to
the Augusta PETCO. She was delighted to find not one parrot waiting for her,
but three to choose from! But as fate would have it, the right parrot chose
Violet. The Green-Cheek Conure, which Violet has named Madison, hopped right
onto Violet's arm, crawled up to her shoulder, and nestled in the arm of her
vest. The affection was mutual - Violet left the store with Madison, a cage,
carrier, food, treats, and toys. At last report, Madison - who loves to
cuddle - has made herself right at home in Violet's house.
