Bake-A-Wish for Make-A-Wish

Hello Make-A-Wish of Maine Friend and Supporter!

We recently told you about Bake-A-Wish for Make-A-Wish – a Statewide Bake Sale to raise funds to help grant wishes to seriously ill children in Maine. Thank you so much for expressing your interest in helping us to create the largest bake sale in our state, while bringing hope, strength and joy to our very special wish families!

Our goal is to have volunteers and friends of Make-A-Wish team up between March 20th and May 25th to put on bake sales in their local communities – at schools, offices, churches, stores, community events, etc.

The information below will give you tips on how to get started. To begin, download, complete and return this sign-up sheet!

Thank you in advance for your support and enthusiasm for Bake-A-Wish. We look forward to working with you beginning on March 20 (the first day of spring!).

Sincerely,
The Make-A-Wish of Maine Team

About the Bake-A-Wish for Make-A-Wish Statewide Bake Sale:
What better way to raise money to grant wishes than to bake and sell sweets with your friends, coworkers and family? Make-A-Wish of Maine is celebrating the long awaited first Bake-A-Wishday of spring by kicking off the largest statewide bake sale on March 20, 2010!
How can you help?
We need people to organize and host bake sales in their respective communities. What does that entail?

  1. Find a location and seek necessary approval
  2. Set a date for your sale – between March 20-May 25, 2010
  3. Contact the Make-A-Wish office and let us know about your location and date
    (send in attached form)
  4. Make-A-Wish will assist you by staffing with available volunteers and bakers if needed

What materials do you need for your bake sale?

  1. Tables, chairs
  2. Cash box or bag to keep money safe
  3. Petty Cash to make change with ($20 should be adequate – bills/coins)
  4. Pens, markers
  5. Materials from MAW tool kit (banners, balloons, Betty Crocker mixes, etc.)
  6. All sale items should be individually wrapped
  7. If you have a laptop, you can run it at your sale to encourage the Betty Crocker Give $5, Get $5 coupon campaign. Or, donating directly to Make-A-Wish online!

What is the Betty Crocker “Stirring up Wishes” Campaign?
Stirring Up Wishes is Betty Crocker’s multi-year cause-marketing program with the Make-A-Wish Foundation® to help grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions and bring hope, strength and joy to their lives. This year, chapter supporters can join Betty Crocker in-store and online to raise $500,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and help grant wishes for deserving wish kids.

How Can You Help Betty Give Funds to the Maine Chapter?

  1. Buy specially marked baking products at your local grocery store:
Starting in March, look for specially marked Betty Crocker® products at grocery stores nationwide – Betty Crocker will donate 10¢ to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for every specially marked package purchased, with a guaranteed minimum donation of $250,000 and a maximum donation of $500,000. The dispersing of these funds will be based on zip codes where products were purchased.
  2. Give $5, Get $5 in Coupons:
Supporters can visit StirringUpWishes.com from March 1-March 31, donate $5 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Maine and get $5 worth of downloadable Betty Crocker coupons.
  3. How is this tied to the Statewide Bake Sale?
Spread the word to your bake sale customers about the Give $5, Get $5 and specially marked Betty Crocker products to help us raise money from Betty. Plus, Betty Crocker has supplied us with kits to help you get started on your bake sale! These kits will include Betty Crocker products and fun items to use during your bake sale. They are available on a first come, first serve basis until we run out.

A FEW IDEAS...
Suggestions for What to Sell:
Of course, any yummy baked goods are what you’ll be selling! But here are a few suggestions to tie your products in with Make-A-Wish:

  • Our colors are blue, silver and white – use these for frostings, sprinkles, etc.
  • Stars are associated with Make-A-Wish because of our logo – how about star-shaped cookies?
  • Betty Crocker will be featuring cupcake recipes on the www.stirringupwishes.com site that are the favorites of wish kids.

Suggestions for How to Get Others Involved:
In these tough times, people are all still looking for small ways to give back to their communities and help others – any way they can. A bake sale is a great way to get people involved in different ways, and still raise funds with products that are affordable for those who want to give!

  • How about getting your own children, nieces, nephews, neighbors, etc. to help with the baking? Kids really “get” Make-A-Wish and it’s a great way to teach them about helping other kids in need, and have fun baking at the same time!
  • Do you belong to a service organization, Rotary Club or networking group? Spread the word there among your peers. Same with your kids – Girl Scout Troops, Cub Scouts? If they can’t help with a bake sale – they can go online and Give $5, Get $5!
  • Maybe your local Wal-Mart or grocery store will allow you to set up a table for the bake sale in their lobby? Perhaps your workplace? Workplace cafeteria?
  • Make spring baskets to sell to your neighbors! Allow them to pre-order some of their favorite items and wrap them into a pretty basket that welcomes warmer weather.
  • As your local bakery to pick a special treat that will give $1 to Make-A-Wish with every purchase. Or, maybe your local bakery would be able to donate baked goods to your sale!
  • Challenge another school or student group to see who can raise the most.
